You Are Being Watched

A new Jordanian road safety campaign, called Anta Morakab (Arabic for you are being watched), will be launched next week with the aim of increasing public awareness of road safety issues.

Jordan has launched several campaigns dealing with this same issue of road safety before, but this one will be different in it’s approach, as it is planned to follow drivers and nominate ones who adhere to road regulations for an award. And thus encourage drivers to stick to street rules rather than scare them by issuing them tickets.

“The campaign is based on a new approach to reward good drivers, according to George Haddad, president of the Central Trade and Auto Company, Al Markazia, which is sponsoring the initiative.

“Traffic accidents rank third on the list of causes of death in the Kingdom; hence it is our duty to help raise traffic awareness in order to impact the behaviour of individuals towards more responsibility on the roads,” he said.

According to official figures, the number of traffic accidents in 2008 stood at 101,000, compared to 111,000 in 2007.

Fatalities from traffic accidents dropped by 25 per cent in 2008 to 752, compared with 992 in 2007. Injuries also went down by 22 per cent last year compared to 2007, when their number stood at 11,329.” The Jordan Times

We are talking about a number of less than 6 million citizens living in Jordan, which makes it a big ratio of accidents, as I have already discussed in a previous article. So the question here is: Will this approach work for drivers who have made speeding and street-rules-breaking as part of their daily driving trips?

I hope, but I can’t help but wonder!!!

Wa’d,the picture showing collision is horrible.
No one can replace or create the parts of a human body,a person must always keep this thing in his mind while driving a vehicle.

Yes Vijay, very true...
The picture was taken for a horrible accident that happened in Jordan a while ago, when some teens, 4 boys and a girl, all under the age of 18, were driving without a license in Aqaba/Jordan where they spent Eid vacations with their families.
Very sad, but I guess there is a lesson to learn in here...

Wa’d,the earth is still a safe place due to the majority of those who are abiding rules and regulations and thinks about others also.
Why the parents are allowing such young children to drive. They are creating danger for others too.

I am not sure how the kids got the car in the first place, since the Jordanian age for driving is actually 18, which none of them was... I just hope parents would start paying attention to how their kids are spending their time, if not for their kids sake, then for the sake of everyone who may be around their kids at any time of the day...

Hope all is well
This approach will fail the same as trying to put restrictions or scare tactic on your people involvement with sex or drinking or smoking
Their hormones and the nothing can kill me attitude of youth will listen to nothing and is why we will never inprove in the evolution of humans
Their is nothing more self centred than youth-NATURE NEEDS THAT

Hello Wayne :)
Oh yes, as much as I want this to be untrue, I agree with u 100%. The sad thing is that this is the general attitude in Jordan, and it is not strictly that of teens... I guess we will continue to suffer the results of people’s love for danger...

As long as we fewer humans remain conscious we will dizzily try to change things. Only nature can change –if she finds a need to

a campaign like this would work pretty fine in my country. We got more drivers flauting traffic rules at leisure. It gets worse at night, after a couple of beers and with a prostitute on the side... ;-)

Give me a buzz if this campaign turns out successful... maybe a our leaders can pick a leaf
