Jordan :

I read a news article today in one of the Jordanian news papers, reporting a case of a girl who went up a high building in Amman, called the Jordanian television and told them that she is about to commit suicide, she gave details about the planned time and place of suicide, and asked for her death to be aired live on Television.

Of Suicide and Society

Reading the news, I could sympathise with the girl without really knowing anymore details about the background of this story. I could sympathise for the mere fact that this is a 20-year-old-girl, who is eager to end her life on national T.V.

Reading the comments written by lay people of my society on the article made me feel that we are hundreds of years behind understanding the concept of respect to our own humanity. Comments were actually either sarcastic, or accusing the girl of just wanting publicity, that being the reason behind calling the T.V. station.

I may be a bit biased and understanding to people with different kinds of problems because of my background as an occupational therapist, who worked before with people with psychiatric problems, as well as others with disabilities who live their lives constrained with whatever our able-bodied society has to offer; and that is usually lack of understanding, as well as physical and societal barriers to their BEING. However, even if I wasn’t an occupational therapist, I think I would be humane enough not to blame the girl for her suicide attempt, or accuse her of wanting publicity. I can’t believe someone could be this stupid. I mean, where I come from, if a girl wants to be popular, she’d apply for the “Star Academy” show, or maybe the “Millions Poet” depending on her interests, or how about a national competition for reading!!! But suicide? Isn’t this an indication of emotional or psychiatric issues? How could someone possibly be so shallow-minded to think that everyone lives the same healthy life that they themselves live?

It is on days like this that I feel most in need for a miracle to make all of those people more aware of “the other”, their feelings, and their different living circumstances...

Amen to that...

Hey Wa’D,

Its because the world has become very cynical...and dismissive nowadays.

Society as a whole lacke the love and affection required to fellow beings.

We will have a miracle and the coming days will see the world as a better place...i hope.

Bye..

bLUE,
I know what you mean...It’s a sad world when the only commets you hear are of sarcasm, hate, and ridicule.

A similar incident happened in Mexico nt long ago...A young man was ready to jump from an overpass into an 8 lain highly trafficked avenue...Police blocked the avenue, hundreds of people gathered around...As the police tried to save the young man, people below (not all of the people) screamed ”quit trying to grab attention, jump already.”
WTF?

Another highly publicized incident happened two weeks ago..A young man with dyed blond hair, tight ”emo pants” and a striped sweater sñlashed his wrists in an apartment complex....the comments in the internet news where only about how ridiculous he looked and that it would have been better had he died (his slashes did not kill him) as it would have ”improved” society...

Sad to see how little human lives are valued.

hey Oscar,
these are the kind of incidents that make u think: what on Earth happened to our world?!!???

It is kind of scary where we stand today as humans, makes u want to stay as healthy and strong as possible simply bcz u never know what people would think of u or even do to u, if u ever fell weak or sick...

It’s scarey to think of ever being in true need..Examples like this do nothing to improve the image of where the world is heading...

Thankfully there ARE still caring people in this world, but it seems as if they are few and far between what we have as a norm in society.

Sad but true, people have become de-sensitized and lack empathy or care for each another, not all people are so harsh in their judgement of their distressed fellow humans.
For this girl to contemplate suicide to me - means she must have been in great emotional pain and felt her life was hopeless with out joy or purpose so to her - death would seem a preferable choice rather than having to struggling with life.
I think the majority of people couldn’t care less as long as it doesn’t affect them and they are ok so it seems most numans are basically self centered creatures.

I guess that stands true.. Sadly, if it is not a tragedy that is staring us directly in the face, invovloving ourselves or one of our own, we just don’t seem to care much..As if the train of humanity has simply kareened off it’s track taking compassion for others with it.

What both of you are saying is very correct, and very unfortunate at the same time. We Are so very self centered that we stopped caring for the pain in other people’s lives. But not just that, we also dare to ridicule it as if we are ever protected from all miseries in life.

I just hope the few caring people left on this planet pass their kindness on to the coming generations, cz if they don’t, then I am not sure how long this planet will last !!!

I feel if only people would stop and think - then try to understand by putting themselves in the other persons shoes - may be then we might all be a bit kinder to each other by seeing things from different perspectives, knowing as human beings we have that connection and bond.

No one gets off this planet alive, so in the short time we’re here why do people have to make it so miserable for others, everybody at some time in their lives sooner or later will be touched by a tragedy, unless they are unfeeling unthinking, uncaring robots even so - their lives will eventually be touched too and taken away.

We humans are terrible in the understanding of the human body and the mind, we still can’t accept mental weakness and the imperfect firing of the neurons of some brains
The so called normal human will never understand the sick mind of a person that wants to commit sucide because of the logic that is presented to the persons flawed thoughts
We are an imperfect soft tissue animal that will always have a percentage of humans that can’t deal with earth life

We are all imperfect, and life is a struggle - we stuggled to be born, we struggle to walk, we struggle to learn, struggle to work, pay bills, struggle through relationships, rear kids, etc. then we die. Some sooner some later.

Our biggest struggle as humans is to see truth and face it –not being able to achieve this we live dizzy thinking their is a straight line to mental abilities and handicaps
Anyone that says why did that person commit suicide ?or why did that person kill ?then they live in a dizzy world of not understanding the human brain

What truth? What is the truth and facing it mean?
Everbody’s perception of truth and understanding differs from one person to the next.
Unless it’s a fact of evidence which is then a proven truth.

Despite of great technological and scientific development we are not able to understand the human mind.
Can’t we find out the chemical reaction inside the mind that compels one to commit suicide!

Reality is what a person that lived long enough thinks to be true ,because it was planted on them by others , as long as others form your realities than they will be there ,but when you die there is no more need for a earthly reality ,only the reality put on us again by others speculations, so reality thinking there is no reality

Human life, biologists now know, is really the sum of the lives of many individual cells organized in specific ways. And all disease is the result of processes that go awry within cells or among cells. Cancer and the common cold, heart disease and hay fever, even AIDS and arthritis, all afflict people because of failed mechanisms within cells. This is why biologists say basic research–aimed at understanding how cells work rather than at conquering any specific disease–promises knowledge that can be used to attack many, and perhaps all, diseases
Even with a chemical cure for mental illness we still wouldn’t get to all in need because most people hide their feelings or sickness

Its OK Wayne
It’s all about the organic and chemical composition of body, what about the society and circumstances that compels a person to commit suicide. In India thousands of peasants have committed suicides in last five years due to poor condition of agriculture sector here.

You pose some good questions that no one will ever answer in perfection of understanding but ,a suicide attempt is a clear indication that something is gravely wrong in a person’s life. No matter the race or age of the person; how rich or poor they are, it is true that most people who commit suicide have a mental or emotional disorder.

The most common underlying disorder is depression, 30% to 70% of suicide victims suffer from major depression or bipolar (manicdepressive) disorder.

I think the reasons people commit suicide is as individual as the person who commits it and can be complex.

One can generalise thats its a chemical imbalance, emotional disorder, bad luck, distressed circumstances, unable to face - what ever, but even sane rational intelligent people commit suicide too and have their reasons.

Some times it can be a spur of the moment thing and they just jump off the planet and for others its a serious cry for help.

Hi Wayne,
I totally understand what ur saying here, and agree with it as well. However, I am not sure we need to understand the human brain to be able to sympathise with others... At times like those, we don’t need to be scientists, but humans...

Its nice to see you here :)
