Stability was rediscovered once again in AlTafayleh neighborhood in Eastern Amman after riots reportedly caused injuries among anti-riots police forces and cases of tear gas inhalation among rioters.
Riots were started after the death of a 20-year-old man allegedly beaten by police members after his arrest due to his involvement in a fight.
A statement denouncing the riots was issued by an association representing the families of the neighborhood in concern, and police members suspected to be involved in the criminal incident were referred to court after needed interrogations.
The case is not closed yet, but the steps taken so far are positive ones towards punishing those responsible for the death of the young man. What we need now is proof that similar incidents won’t happen again, as this case is not the first of its kind in Jordan. Proof can be gained from the punishment those police members will get for what they did if they were proved guilty; A severe punishment is some kind of assurance that similar incidents won’t happen again. There are several more things that could be done to reassure the public that this crime is just one individual crime, and not a reoccurring pattern, but the start lays in the punishment of those police members.
