Jordanian Government has finally taken the first step towards a new clear-aired Jordan, as a new smoking ban law in public facilities is out. This is a much needed step in a country considered to have one of the highest percentages of smokers, and THE HIGHEST percentage of teen smokers among Arab countries.

The law went into effect on the first of March, 2009. Now that the law is there, we are left with the agony of the implementation in a country where people ignore “No-Smoking” signs, and where it is actually normal to see a man holding a child with one hand, and a cigarette with another.
“No-Smoking” signs as well as loud speakers were used in some of the public places which were declared as smoking-free areas, to announce that the new law went into effect.
It was announced that those found smoking will be given sentences ranging from one week to a month, or will have to pay a fine of 15-20 Jordanian Dinars.
The title should have been ”smoking ban in public facilities”... anyways, I guess I made that clear in the article itself...
The idea here is that smokers are not just killing themselves, but are also killing US ”non-smokers” when they smoke around us in a closed shopping mall or something...what bothers me the most is that they act as if they can’t abstain from smoking until they finish their shopping and leave the mall...
Sorry for the mistake in the title again :)
and thx for your comments everyone...
thx 4 d comment yooo :)
Its banned in India too but the smokers are occupying the toilets most of the time during journey for smoking and the other travelers are suffering the ”other” way.
People smoking in toilets huh!!! so they’re only killing those who actually use public toilets, that’s a progress isn’t it, LOL... Joking :S
You need awareness before totally banning smoking.
I explained in an earlier comment that I mistakenly wrote the wrong title for the article... Jordan banned smoking in public places only, not smoking as in smoking, they can’t do that.
I am not sure though about education working, cz if u want to smoke, u will smoke... and some educative break on TV will doubtfully change ur mind about it, cz I think we are in time when everyone knows about dangers of smoking, yet numbers of smokers are not changing, if not increasing...
anyways...
Great to see u here M. :)
Well, I am surprised that Jordanians are big smokers too! Highest in Arab countries... Cool. If I come to Jordan, I’ll be aware not to smoke in public.
But, then I don’t think smoking kills. As long as one doesn’t start having 10 cigs a day, it’s fine. In my case, I only use mild/light cigs, so they aren’t really harmful. There are more patients of diabetes and blood pressure in the world... Let’s charge extra tax on sweets!!! :-)
To be honest I was glad about the law when it was first out, but I still see people smoking in public disregarding the new law, dono if its just a phase of transition into a non-smoking environment or if we will keep our position as the country with highest percentage of Arab smokers...
Thx for the comment :)
