As much as I would like to say it is not... Unfortunately... It IS happening again... I have been writing lots and lots of small notes so that I wouldn’t forget things... I have been feeling exhausted after the simplest physical activities... and most important of all... I’ve been feeling sleepy all day long for the last couple of weeks, I even slept for 12 hours last night... 10 pm till 10 am... and yes; I have been getting sick on a monthly basis for 4 months now.
This is usually an indication of something...something that requires quick and proper reaction from me...
Iron Deficiency is the term...
This is probably a different kind of article than the ones I usually write, but I believe this subject is worth writing about, as many of us might suffer the nasty symptoms of Iron deficiency unnecessarily, while they could get diagnosed and treated properly.
For me, it all started three years ago. Right when I started working. The main complaint was difficulty in remembering things. I also struggled to get out of bed every morning, felt tired all day long, and exhausted by the simplest physical activities.
People told me that this was normal, and that they all went through phases of “amnesia” when they started working, referring it all back to the stress of work. But no, I knew it wasn’t the stress of work. I knew something was not O.K... I went to see a doctor, and asked for a blood test, while thinking that I might be having low levels of vitamin B12 (which could cause some of these symptoms). The doctor however asked for more than just a B12 test, she asked for several other tests to rule out any possible medical conditions. I went and got my blood tested, and a couple of days later I got the results, and there it was: Iron Deficiency was what caused me all those nasty symptoms.

Pills were prescribed, and that was when my struggle with iron deficiency started. After taking pills for four months, two pills a day, I was able to finally get my iron level to 16, knowing that the normal range for an adult female (I know I am a female, but I do doubt the adult thing considering my behaviour... anyways...) is 13-150, which means that my numbers fall in the lower range.
A good thing though is that my symptoms were limited to the things mentioned above; while other people with such low rates could get much nastier symptoms including Pica... Pica is when an individual craves ice or dirt... yes... it’s true... and I did hear of people who ate dirt because they craved it due to low iron levels in their bodies... I hope I never get to that point :S.
Now... what do I do next? I will go get my blood tested today if all goes as planned, to get the numbers that I need to struggle with during the next couple of months, and take this seriously, change my diet, and take my pills like the good girl I am...
So, unless this thing kills me ;), there will be a part two of this post, to keep you updated of how it goes for me... and to give you people more information about this subject... well... if anyone is interested in knowing more :P
Peace Y’all...
thx :)
This is a very important post!
My wife has battled with anemia since her pregnancy with our first child..
She is extremely active, a whirlwind would be stating it mildly...She tends to everyone: me, our three children, all of her students (more than 100), the town, you name it...
Last May she began to fall ill:writing notes for everything was te beginning. She was tired (this is very unusual for her),very tired: She was dizzy, her hand and feet would interchange in losing feeling; tingly as she called it.
She started losing weight, which was extremly obvious on her already slim build. The doctors checked her for everything and everything: Lupus, diabetes, heart, etc...
In the end it was stress: and an extreme vitamin deficiency: iron and vitamins B: She was given iron and muti-b’s, apart from that she was given diazapam to sleep:(she’s like a little kid, she just doesn’t want to miss out on anything, thus never wants to sleep)
She took the vitamins voluntarily, the diazapam she took, I think 3 times, almost had to force her to take it.
Anyways, she started feeling much better after about a month..she didn’t continue diazapam, but began forcing herself to get out more..she began walking at our local track daily..(at first this had a reverse effect, because as she slept better, she also began dropping more weight.)but it eventually leveled out.
All was well until late november when our skies turned grey and the temperatures began dropping...BAM! It happened again..She began having stomache pains, dizziness, headaches, fatigue, and in general she was unhappy because of the ”lack of order” (as she calls it) in her mind. (even forgetting to write the little notes to herself or once writing the note, forgetting where she put it)....
Turns out, she is being affected by the weather..literally. She doesn’t get outside much, as she hates cold, wet weather..the days turn to night faster and faster and she feels as if she is always behind....She has ”forgotten” to take her vitamins and is pretty much right back to the beginning with an additional diagnosis of gastritis and colitis...
It turns out, both her mother and sister notice changes with the lack of sunlight and cold as well, although none of them have been ”diagnosed” as having ”seasonal depression) all of their doctors say many women (whether being severe enough to be considered seasonal depression or not) feel a change along with the severe changes in weather.
She’s taking all of he vitamins again as well as meds for her gastritis and working on eating better, and will have new bloodwork done next week to check her iron levels...
I guess the pointof this long coment is, maybe it happens to women easier..Maybe stress (whether good or bad) just makes you forget about yourself and your needs causing to these vitamin diffciancies and more..It seems to be a cycle: one that women need to be very aware of to stay healthy.
Take care Wa’d!!! As I tell my wife, you can do no good to others if you, YOURSELF, are not cared for.
”You can do no good to others if you, YOURSELF, are not cared for”... Very true... I guess I am overworking myself, and not really sticking to an appropriate diet...I do need to take this seriously this time and work on changing things, it will be hard I know, and it will need an enormous effort from me, cz by the end of the day, this is a life style that I have adopted a long time ago... But it needs to change... and I will work hard to make it happen as soon as I get my blood test results...
Add that to women (anybody actually) like my wife andlike you seem to be: extremely energetic, ready to take the world by the tail, and internal chaos can strike.
My wife eats what and when she wants, but has always opted for ”picking throughout the day”...unfortunatly musch of the ”picking foods” do not have what the vody needs to continue under the lifestyle she enjoys. Sooner or later, the body (and mind) just wears out....out of gas..
Take care..and don’t fall into caring for yourself ”just until you feel better”..While you, like my wife, will surely not want to change your ”do it all” lifestyle, you HAVE to change the way you care for yourself, to assure you can maintain your whirlwind days-
that means you need to sleep and eat well, and AKNOWLEDGE, not just push through your bodies warning signals.
I will try my best to rest more and eat better... and I hope I can stick to this rather than apply it the first couple of days after I get my results :D
I guess that’s why i wrote about it... to get me some support, and even some observing eyes who would make sure I’m doing what I have to do...
Thx for ur comments... and the advice :)
My wife, I swear has more diet pepsi coursing thru her body than blood...Try to drink more water and juice. It’s a start
Now seriously... I’m trying... real hard... and I actually managed to not drink any for a while now :) the cold weather is helping as well, so it’s not all my personal effort, but I guess that doesn’t really matter considering my health status :D
I’m seeing lots of things in common with ur wife,,, gotta meet her oneday :D
Anyways, if it is cold and dreary there as well, on sunny days GET OUT. The sunlight helps lift moods, clearing minds..My wife goes to the park in front of her school on recess, eats her lunch there in the sun, instead of inside..She can’t wait for spring, says it always gets her back on track, mentally and physically...
Good that you wrote about this...all those who are having such symptoms will look into it seriously..
The other day I went to donate my blood, they told they cannot take it as my iron level is less.. I was like.... so what??
Now I know why I feel lousy all day...I have been dieting since I can remember..lol...and now I forgot how to eat healthy…
So am also not lazy...:)but sick..
Eagerly Waiting for part 2...
Good to see you here :)
Now... You have to take this seriously and ask your Dr. about it, you may need to be taking pills for it or something...
And I know I’m not the best person to give advice about this, but, eat healthy will ya? LOL
See you around :)
In my case, when I first felt the symptoms, I HAD to take action, I mean, it was so awful that it was beginning to affect my whole life, and knowing that my work is very demanding and needs lots of physical activity, that made it even worse... so ignoring it wasn’t really an option...
and I am sorry to say this but: what you don’t know COULD actually hurt you... Don’t ignore ur health, I know I myself am too lazy concerning this issue, but by the end of the day: our health is a basic step towards our well-being....
So... don’t be scared, u go see a Dr. and tell me all about how it goes... I’m sure it’s just a Vitamin or sthg ;)
Peace :)
First i wish you quick recovery gal, thanks a lot for your educative article, to be sincere its an eye opener to many people who have been having such a problem bt thought it was a normal feeling. All the best hope to hear soon that you are totally healthy and active.
I really hope that I could help people see what this does, cz I know lots of us don’t take such symptoms seriously and iron deficiency goes undiagnosed and untreated, causing many problems in the future...
I’m glad you liked the article...
See you around :)
Hmm I think I should see a doctor:|
thx girl :)
I thought to give you a suggestion which may help after reading your article that affects so many women, and its awful to have to struggle, just to get through the day.
One of my daughters and myself have had the same problems, and I found a herbal tonic that did actually work for us called Floradix.
At one time I was severely Iron deficiant to the point of almost needing a blood transfusion and I bought it (a friends recomendation) but I read the instructions wrong and was taking mega doses accidently, without any ill affects, in fact the opposite, it fixed the problem, so I suggest if you can get some to try and see if it helps, it won’t do you any harm.
Take care and get well.
Real nice to see you here :)
I have been looking for the proper treatment for me for around 3 years now, and things seem to get well, but then I go back to my former status of exhaustion, lousy memory, and all...
So YES, I would love to try new treatments that could get me well, and keep me well...
Thx a lot for the advice, I’ll be looking for ”Floradix” around here :)
Do you have acupuncturists in Jordan, W’Ad? They are amazing, and might be able to help with your problem. I would recommend trying to find an alternative doctor to help you, as they can look into the whole, mind/body/spirit aspect.
I also wonder, reading about your symptoms, if you might have some kind of chemical poisoning. You might also check out Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
Good luck!
yes we do have Acupuncturists in Jordan, but I’m a kind of ”take a pill and get it over with” person, mostly due to lack of time to do anything, which I know is not very wise...
I’m not sure about a chemical poisoning, I did think about the chronic fatigue syndrome though, but looking through the symptoms, I don’t think that’s what I have. they actually don’t give u such a diagnosis if ur tests (i.e.: blood tests) proved to have a certain imbalance...so with my iron level, I wouldn’t be diagnosed at the moment...
thx for the comment :)
