Hariri's Tribunal in Action

An international tribunal, set in Netherlands, opened Sunday the 1st of march , 2009, to start prosecuting suspects in the assassination of the former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.

Hariri died in an explosion that killed twenty two other people on the 14th of February, 2005, to be the start of a series of assassinations targeting important Lebanese political figures.

The United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) has recently requested Lebanon to send in the case related to the assassination of the former Prime Minister, along with a list of names of those detained as suspects related to the assassination.

After Hariri’s assassination, four Lebanese generals, including the former head of the presidential guard, were arrested as suspects. Suspicions behind the Generals arrest rise strongly with the fact that they have not been questioned for three years, the reason why Hezbollah saw it as an arbitrary detention. Three civilians were also arrested, for holding back information which was related to the case, yet were later released on bail.

Hariri's Tribunal in Action

The UN tribunal has asked authorities in Lebanon to send in all details about the case as soon as possible, as well as keep detainees held until a decision is made regarding whether they are to be sent to the UN court.

This tribunal is considered as one which lots of Lebanese people have been waiting for, while hoping that finding those responsible for Hariri’s assassination, and bringing them to justice, will be the first step towards a safer Lebanon.

In a meeting with the Lebanese parliamentary leader, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamene‘i said today that the pressure on Lebanon shows that it has become ‘the heart of the Middle East’. He also stated that the 33-day Lebanese war against ‘the Zionist’ had inspired the 22-day Palestinian war against Israel.

hmmm, well I’m not sure about the inspiration thing here, I believe the attacks and sieges of Israel is the real inspiration for both wars...

Thx for the comment :)

ALL the innocent people assassinated by the Mossad, MI6, CIA etc.. Should receive justice at last, not just Kharariri to use his case as a spring board to harass countries that had nothing to do with his assassination.

Hariri was not only a president of Lebanon; he was one of the richest Lebanese to my knowledge. When you are powerful man you have one problem when you are rich man you have one problem when you are both of them, and plus you have neighbors like Israel, Syria and Iran you have 5 problems enough dynamite to blow him up god bless his soul for eternity

Ziad, I guess this makes it even harder to find the real attacker. I just hope those in responsible would stop politicizing things and start looking at the picture beyond all the biases caused by politics.

Nameer, I really wanted to comment with a sentence by the end of the article about how hard it will be, but I just didn’t want to sound pessimistic :S
I just hope they get the REAL murderers in all of the assassinations that have been going on in Lebanon, cz lots of lives have been lost over there

Maybe what will happen is that we will need a Tribunal to oversee the functioning of this tribunal...and another to oversee the working of that tribunal and so on...i really doubt whether true justice will be done or only political justice will be the end of it...

Hope for the best...accept the rest...thats the test..
