In an incident that is the third of its kind within a period of two months; Jordanian side of the Jordan valley was affected last Saturday with fires originating on the Israeli side of the Jordan valley. And despite Israeli promises to warn Jordan of such incidences when they occur, Jordanian authorities did not hear about the fires when they started, causing an amount of damage that could have been contained have the Jordanian authorities been informed about it.
(”During the Jordanian-Israeli technical committee meeting held last month, we demanded that the Israelis put an end to the fires and inform us in case a fire breaks out near the borders,” Tarawneh noted.
The meeting was held in the aftermath of a fire that started on the Israeli side on July 18 and damaged 60 dunums of agricultural land on the border, resulting in losses estimated at JD25,000.
“Jordan’s Ambassador to Israel Ali Ayed contacted the Israeli foreign ministry on Saturday and requested an official clarification in this regard. The envoy said the lack of cooperation on the part of Israel “is not acceptable”, adding that Jordan demands guarantees that this does not occur again.” )– The Jordan Times
Jordanian officials reported that the lack of cooperation on the Israeli side is unacceptable, and they have every right to say so, especially when the fires are affecting what is known as Jordan’s vegetable’s basket.

Forest fires can be unpredictable, sometimes seeming under control, only to spread as ”root fires”, invisible to firefighters on the ground, only to spring up overground as much as a mile or more away–sometimes trapping firefighters between two blazes.
