Death Penalty to Be Stopped in Jordan?

Jordan :

Human rights watchdogs and some Jordanian activists have been working towards the elimination of death penalty from Jordanian law book, knowing that since March 2006, no executions have been carried out, although there are 45 prisoners, waiting for their death sentences to be executed.

Death Penalty to Be Stopped in Jordan?

Director of the Correctional and Rehabilitation Centres Colonel Sharif Al Omari reported that he has no idea about the reason behind the abstaining from executions since 2006, stressing that the prison administration has not received any orders related to that matter.

The questions remaining here are: don’t murderers deserve the same fate that they gave to their victims? And won’t crimes increase in case death penalty is stopped in Jordan? Both of which are questions that activists need to think of deeply before standing in the face of such penalty.

I am pro death penalty where there is overwhelming evidence against a person and minimal mitigating factors.
However, if there is even a slight bit of doubt, then the accused should get the benefit of the doubt and be sentenced to prison.

Death penalty has been around in human history since medieval ages and it will always be there as long as humans think they are the god that can decide the final fate of the accused. I am not a proponent for it although in my country, it is the capital punishment. It wrecks the family of the accused and they will forever be left with a stigma that the accused has done something really unpardonable. I also suspect there are some accused who had been wrongly sentenced to death for something done in which they were just the unfortunate scapegoats. How do we address this issue? Humans can never really decide with their own laws what is truthfully right or wrong.

Laws are general guidelines, but each case has to be dealt with individually, it is true that it wrecks families, but we also need to keep in mind how many families were wrecked because someone decided to kill another, sometimes for the simple reason of taking the 10$ in the victims pocket...

The death sentence is reserved for murders, and only murders of the worst kind. It is for people who have committed deeds which most of you probably can't even imagine. Don't go around saying that it is never ok to kill someone as punishment, the punishment for these crimes should be much, much worse than death.

Yep, some of the stories I heard people who got executed in Jordan are pretty nasty ones, making the death penalty a well-deserved one.

I fully support the use of the death penalty in certain cases. In reality, it's a win-win situation. The person suffers less than living his life in prison. And society is rid of a dangerous person.

The death penalty is stupid! It should be replaced with like isolation for life! I would rather die then be in isolation for the rest of my life.

hmmm... that’s another way to look at it!!!

Getting rid of the Death Penalty only cheapens murder. I still believe it should be an eye for an eye. All of you that are against the Death Penalty are hypocrits, you know if someone murdered your family you would want the death penatly for that person.

Well, let’s just say that people have the right to speak up without being called hypocrites. I believe in death penalty in extreme cases, but I don’t blame those against it for feeling that way, after all, I think our backgrounds play a great role in such views...so let’s not call names...

and thank you for ur comment :)

I swear we are still barbarians. This should not even be an issue anymore. Almost every other modern country does not support the death penalty. It is insane that we are still arguing about this

I wouldn’t use the word barbarian Stephanie. I have heard of cases where people were murdered brutally and inhumanely, I believe that if those criminals proved to be fully sane should get what they deserve, u’d feel the same if it was a family member of urs which is the victim I guess

Well the death penalty is ok only in the rarest of rarest cases....extreme brutality...and only after the due process of law takes its course with total evidence.

There should not be death penalty in cases such as killing in the heat of the moment or unadverantly as it is a one off mistake.

The background of the convict should play a major role in determining the penalty.

Hey Hari.
Actually death penalties in Jordan are given in the most severe cases, but I just don’t think we can say that it is to be deleted off of our law book... cz there will always be people who will do things to deserve it...

Thx for the comment :)

This is good news, it shows that they take the execution of a person very seriously.
I do think that if a member of my family was murdered - I would want revenge, although killing the perpetrator wont bring back my loved one.
A lot depends on the case, the circumstances, the motives, the evidence etc.

Hello Lynne,
Yes I believe it is taken seriously here in Jordan. and u just spoke out my mind, If someone kills someone close to me, I am not sure I would want them to live, but then again, this is how so many people think, and if death penalty is canceled, people will start taking law in their hands, and revenge crimes would increase to some extent...

Thx for the comment :)

This is very interested. Mexico is facing something similar. Although the death penalty has been unofficially ”illegal” for quite some time, it was just recently ”officially” written into the books as ”illegal” and abolished for use in the judiciary system.

In Mexico however, with what has happened here in the drug war, some states are requesting a la reversal allowing the death penalty for kidnappers who kill their victim.

The problem here, is we could not implement such law without a complete overhaul of our dated, inept system.

We do not hve trial by jury here. NO ONE is innocent until proven guilty. Here one man, the judge, will decide your fate, under an inquisitional closed door ”guilty until proven innocent” system....The outcome of a reversal could be tragic.

Yea I actually remember commenting on an article of urs on this issue. The thing here is that Jordan is not really saying that it is illegal now, but no one knows why are all of those death sentences put on hold. Some officials have actually said that it will not be illegal, which I somehow agree with; cz with all of the horrible cases that I am reading about in our Jordanian newspapers these days, I think it is still necessary.

In a literal sense, it seems quite contradictive: Killing is wrong, therefore I will punish you by killing you. Makes you wonder, who put the power of ”God” into the one pulling the trigger, switch, lever, etc...

But this is much more than a literal word play. I’m SURE if one of my own were to be killed in the hands of a monster, I would wish to see that person DEAD, removed from society, obliviated...

What is your legal system like? How are being judged or sentenced?

Legal System in Jordan... there are three types of courts here: Civil, military, and religious court systems. each specialized in a specific range of cases. We don’t have juries in Jordan, but the number of judges is different in different kinds of cases. i.e. Major felonies cases have three judges hearing the case and coming up with the judgment. while minor crimes get only one judge.

I hope I’ve answered ur question Oscar :)

Human life consists in mutual service.I find no grief, pain, misfortune, or ”broken heart,” is excuse for cutting off one’s life while any power of service or hope remains. But when all usefulness is over and the person is too dangerous to humankind, and when one is assured of an unavoidable and imminent death, it is the simplest of human rights to choose a quick and easy death in place of a slow and horrible one.
Why is it so surprising that we kill -it is natural and humans have spent more money and time on how to kill than all humanity effects ever
Ho! what hypocrites we human are

Hello Wayne... I think that as inhumane as it may seem, death penalty keeps some balance in societies... but that’s just my opinion...
