Jordan :

Going through the newspaper today, I saw some news about an accident on the Zarqa-Mafraq road in Jordan. The accident was caused by a collision between a truck and a bus, resulting in 4 deaths and 43 injuries.

The sad thing is that these kinds of accidents are becoming part of the Jordanian daily routine, as according to the Jordanian Public Safety officials, on average, two people are killed and fifty more are injured each day due to car accidents; knowing that the total population of Jordan approximates 5 millions. This statistic somehow indicates that each and every Jordanian will be involved in some kind of car accident one day.

Car Accidents in Jordan... An Ongoing Nightmare

Ignoring street rules has been a major factor in the occurring accidents. Drivers tend to speed, change lanes without signaling, and generally drive with an aggressive attitude.

Pedestrians also have their share in what’s happening, especially in a country where the blame is always put on drivers when the accident involves a car and a pedestrian, which could be partly fine, as by the end of the day, drivers should always be very attentive to everything on and around the street, including pedestrians, but that definitely does not mean that pedestrians can cross the road from any place they wish, or that they can run into the street and expect cars to stop for them -a scene that is somehow normal on some Jordanian streets- and get away with it.

I am not sure what is to be done to actually make a change, but maybe trying to be stricter with BOTH drivers and pedestrians will end this killing madness on our streets.

People die because they are too impatient, and too easily cranked up. This should be a lesson to all of us drivers, that if you hold up for a couple of seconds, and graciously LET THE OTHER GUY GET AHEAD OF YOU, a life could be spared.

yes Eliot... I am not sure what is it with people going crazy if someone gets ahead of their car, which could sometimes start a race on a crowded street...

Regarding traffic accident fatalities, I have noticed that not a lot of people wear seat belts here. I remember riding in the front seat of a pick up (they same type of pick-up I had seen overturn in an accident by my home). The driver saw me buckle up and flipped out saying, “Best driver! Best driver!” indicating that he was a safe driver and I didn’t need a belt.

Also, I have noticed there are no backseat seat belts–not just in private cars but in taxis as well, and children are rarely seen in carseats or are buckled up for that matter.

The occurance of traffic accidents is one thing, and perhaps something not always in someone’s control, but I wonder how many of actual deaths here are preventable with the use of a seat belt, car seat or helmet?

hey Hiten, I never let people sit in the passenger’s seat when I’m driving unless they have the seat belt on. I guess people think it’s there for luxury...ur very right about all the souls which could be saved if seat belts are used...

I see people wearing seatbelts but what’s really disturbing to me is seeing a family out for a drive. Mom and dad are wearing seatbelts but the small kids are either standing up in mom’s lap in the front seat with their hands on the dashboard or they’re jumping around in the back seat so they can fly like human missiles if there’s an accident.

As for car seats for kids…forget about it…I can barely convince my wife and mother in law that they are necessary 100% of the time…if the kid is crying…he comes out of the car seat…A lot of parents have the “my car is too small for car seats” argument or the “car seats are too expensive” argument. And of course the number one argument is the “my kids would never sit in a car seat” tack….My daughter is 4 and she knows that she can’t go anywhere in my car unless she is in her seat buckled up (which she does nicely by herself :)

I face the same problem with my parents... they simply don’t think it’s necessary... But hey I’m glad ur daughter does it on her own :)
